Take a few minutes and find out more information on Set-Free Reading!
Set-Free Reading utilizes the Barton Reading and Spelling System as its core instructional tool. The Barton system developed by Susan Barton is Orton-Gillingham influenced and assimilates the best of other OG programs. It is simultaneously multi-sensory and has been proven to be highly effective with struggling readers and spellers.
Typically a student works with one tutor consistently. Our tutors are well trained, closely supervised and highly motivated. All students begin with Book 1 unless they have already had Orton-Gillingham instruction (in this case pre-testing is done to determine where to begin). A student remains in the program until they have competed Book 8 if they are in elementary school or Book 10 if they are in junior high school or above. Books 9 and 10 are designed specifically as preparation for high school and college. The time taken to complete the program varies depending on the student but most students complete the entire program in 2 to 3 years if they take advantage of the summer sessions. The average gain in reading comprehension for one year in the Set-Free program is 2.6 years.
Linda O’Toole has a Masters of Arts degree in Reading from Illinois State University and has been an educator for over 40 years. Most recently she was a Reading Specialist for the Athens School District before founding Set-Free Reading. During her career she has instructed students from the ages of preschool to adult, including all ages in between. Linda has tutored over 100 students to date using the Barton Reading and Spelling System.
Linda is an Advanced Certified Barton Tutor, a Dyslexia Specialist and is certified by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). Linda has tutored at the Valley of Springfield 32 degree Masonic Learning Center, served on their Board of Governors and is also a member of the International Dyslexia Association.
To enroll a student in the Set-Free Reading program please follow this easy three step process:
1. Call Program Director Linda O’Toole at 217.899.1492 to discuss the student’s developmental and academic history, as well as to ask any questions about the program.
2. Complete the Set-Free Reading Student Application and Student Assessment form and email them to Linda at email@example.com or mail to:

3. After reviewing the Student Application and the Student Assessment forms, a Program Supervisor will call you to set up an appointment for a student screening and a follow-up parent/guardian conference. The screening typically takes 1 1/2 hours and will determine if this program is right for your student.
If it is determined by the student screening that the Set-Free Reading program would benefit the student and the parents are in agreement, the student will be scheduled into a tutoring session time. Our fee is $30 per tutoring hour and sessions are to be paid in full at the beginning of each month.
