MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

BECOME A VOLUNTEER TUTOR

Set-Free Reading is looking for volunteer tutors who want to make a difference in the life of a student.

If you are looking for a volunteer position that is more rewarding than licking stamps or filling envelopes, you have come to the right place!

If you are looking for a volunteer position that is more rewarding than licking stamps or filling envelopes, you have come to the right place!  As a tutor you will work one on one with a student helping them through a preset program that is already laid out for you.  We will provide you with all the training you need in addition to all the program materials.  Best of all you do not need any prior teaching experience to be a great tutor!  There is no greater joy than watching a student you work with transition from being discouraged, timid and apathetic to successful, confident and motivated.  This program has been extremely effective for struggling readers – you really can help change a child’s life by volunteering.

Set-Free Reading volunteer tutors work with one student just one hour two days per week.  The program you will be following consists of a total of ten levels that the average student progresses through in about 2-3 years.  Although you only need to give two hours a week, we are looking for volunteers committed to working with their student through the completion of the program.  If you are looking for a short term volunteer opportunity, this might not be the best fit for you.  If you are looking for more of a Big Brother Big Sister style volunteer position where your help provides life changing impact for a child in your local community, this opportunity might be perfect for you!

If you enjoy making a difference, are committed and willing to learn, follow these easy steps to become a Volunteer Tutor:

1.  Fill out our Volunteer Tutor Application and email it to our Program Director – linda.otoole@setfreereading.org or mail to:

Set-Free Reading attn: Linda O’Toole

5709 N. Castano Drive

Litchfield Park, AZ. 85340

2.  After reviewing the application, Linda will contact you to arrange a phone interview to learn a bit more about you and answer any questions you might have.

3.  If you decide that becoming a Volunteer Tutor is right for you, we will schedule your initial training.  This training is about 12 total hours and is typically scheduled across three days.  There is no charge for the training and CPDUs are available to those who desire them.

4. Once training is completed, you will be matched with a student when they enroll in the program.  You will tutor the same student each time for one hour, usually twice a week.  Students on the average are in the program for 2-3 years.
